I bought this game because it won the Games Magazine Game of the Year award. I never typically buy board games but thought I'd give this one a try because I like the theme and it won the award. After getting through the rules, which was a little hard for me as I'm not used to these types of games, I started to play with my friends. I liked how you are in competition to try to buy land or cards. The bidding element is really cool and creates some nice tension in the decision making of the game. New England is another solid entry in the German board game market. It's got everything a game needs: a clever mechanism, a good auction phase, opportunities to build fun little bits--it's all there!
And it works very well. The clever mechanism in this case is that whatever amount you bid, that is the same amount you pay to take your turn. And since you can make up to 2 turns, bidding high means losing a lot of money. It's a simple mechanic that works really well. The other trick is that there is too much to do, and not enough resources to do it in.
