For the daring and adventurous, there are too many lost cities to seek and explore. The search can take you to the Himalayas, the Brazilian rain forest, the ever-shifting sands of the desert, ancient volcanoes and to Neptune's Realm. Of course, one cannot go everywhere with limited resources so the players must choose which expeditions to begin and which to leave to others. Those with high confidence may have the opportunity to up the stakes: increasing the rewards for success, but risking more should the expedition fail. The player who finds the right balance will have successful expeditions. Too many expeditions will put a strain on limited resources and yield failure. Too few may guarantee success, but not victory! |

Confessions of a married gamer: I own a good number of games. I play the ones my wife likes. I should put this in all my 2-player reviews, because these really come down to "can I play with repeatedly with my SO?" The answer for Lost Cities is *yes*.
It plays fast, and it leaves time to play it again. Usually the loser is ready to play right away to avenge their loss, but this game has enough agonzing choices that you'll want to try "one more time."
Ah, I should add, though, that out of all the 2 player games, this one seems to catch on the best with people other than my wife. I introduced this game to some high school students and they stayed up until 3 am replaying and replaying.

I'm sorry to say this game is very overrated. It is a simple game of hand management easily played with a poker deck. The theme is so non-existent that the fact they actually made it seem like a fun exploration game is almost false advertising! There is no theme to this game, it is a simple numbers exercise. I find it rather dull I'm afraid, though I'll play a hand now and again.

For those of you unfamiliar with the desgner of this game, Reiner Knizia, here is a brief, generalized description of his style of game:
Simple mechanics, lots of meaningful decisions, convoluted scoring mechanism (sometimes overly so), typically a rather thin theme.
The brilliance in his games (it should be clear by now that I'm a big fan) is usually in the scoring. His supreme ability to balance a game shows up here. That is the case with Lost Cities. The game play hinges around getting your expeditions past a threshold before you gain any positive points. The tension of teh game comes from managing your hand and discards such that you can assure yourself of maintaining positive scor

I love to play a variety of games. It’s rare for me to play the same game time after time, as I have so many that I want to play. Some games do break the mold for me, however, and I play them more often. Lost Cities, however, has gone beyond that. It’s the first game I own that I think I’m actually going to have to replace because we’ve played it so much. Why is that? Is it because it’s my favorite game? No, but rather so many people (my wife high on the list) are willing to play it with me. (And, there’s the small fact that when I lose to my wife, I tend to throw the cards across the room.)
Is Lost Cities worth getting? The simple truth is that if you don’t currently own Lost Cities, or

With all the good things said about this game, I thought I'd love it. And you know what? The game is filled with tough decisions (which I like); it does have nice art; it does have an enduring quality. But it has no theme! I could play this game with a deck of cards, and that, to me, is not a good quality in a game that costs almost $20. The strange part is that the game is overpriced because of the extraneous board they put in.
The game is okay to pass time with but is a bit monotonous and has a dash of luck in it. It is in the Kosmos 2-player line, but another game in that same line does what Lost Cities does only better. Check out Balloon Cup and give that serious consideration for a g
